Why do my boobs never look like the ones I see in magazines and online? Aren't they supposed to be more round or more to the center? Would you change anything about your body if you could?
When photographer Mirjam Steinebach posted a photo with a caption about boob insecurity and how it is so strange that we have a certain image of what boobs are supposed to look like, she received an honest message from a woman. The woman said felt unhappy with her breasts and had thus decided to have a breast augmentation. She felt like doing so was still quite a taboo, which made Mirjam curious and she decided to dive into this topic.
She asked about it in her Instagram stories and received a ton of messages about women who would change something about their body, but also about how society has created a very unrealistic image of what a perfect body and the perfect boobs are supposed to look like. From an evolutionary perspective, boobs are here to feed babies, and for that it does not matter whatsoever what they look like. So why are we so obsessed with a certain image of boobs?
This got her thinking. What if everyone took a photo of their boobs and sent it to her so they could all be put into a collage to be shared in order to make women's images of boobs realistic again? This would require some vulnerability, but would also be a powerful statement of acceptation and self love. And so it happened: a body positivity project was born. #normalizeboobs #boobsforboobs
'I feel comfortable to sunbath topless every summer, despite the fact that they're half the size of what they were before breastfeeding. I want other women to recognize their boob shape in others so that they can become less insecure.'
We can only applaud these kinds of efforts that encourage women to celebrate their diverse bodies and let go of unrealistic beauty standards. Check out the photos of perfectly normal boobs Mirjam has collected for her project so far:
